There is something incredibly special about documenting a woman in the season of becoming a mother for the very first time. Skylar’s sunset maternity session on Venice Beach was the perfect blend of calm coastal beauty and the quiet anticipation that comes with waiting for a baby.
At 31 weeks pregnant with a baby boy, Skylar radiated that unmistakable glow that seems to happen when excitement, nerves, and love all meet in the same moment.
Sunset on the Gulf Coast did the rest.
If you’re searching for the perfect location for maternity photos in Southwest Florida, Venice Beach offers some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the region.
Unlike some busier beaches, Venice Beach has:
This combination makes it ideal for maternity photography because it allows for a variety of looks within a short walking distance—soft shoreline images, dreamy sunset silhouettes, and natural, candid moments.
For expecting moms, it also means less walking and more time simply enjoying the moment.

For the first half of her session, Skylar leaned fully into effortless coastal style.
She wore a beautiful crochet open-belly top paired with light drawstring denim, creating the perfect beach boho aesthetic. This look photographed beautifully against the neutral sand and soft tones of the Gulf water.
One of the biggest benefits of maternity sessions on the beach is that outfits don’t need to be overly formal to feel special. Texture—like crochet, linen, or soft cotton—adds movement and interest while still feeling natural in the environment.
This look was relaxed, authentic, and perfectly captured the excitement of a first-time mom soaking in these final weeks before her baby arrives.

For Skylar’s second look, she chose a flowing olive green off-the-shoulder maxi dress from my client closet.
This style of dress is one of my favorite recommendations for maternity sessions because it:
The earthy olive tone paired perfectly with the warm sunset colors reflecting off the water. As the sun dropped lower on the horizon, the dress caught the breeze and created the kind of dreamy, flowing movement that makes sunset beach maternity sessions so magical.

Skylar’s session took place at 31 weeks pregnant, which is often a sweet spot for maternity photography.
At this stage:
For most expecting mothers, scheduling maternity photos between 28–34 weeks provides the best balance between a visible bump and comfort during the session.

A typical sunset maternity session along Florida’s Gulf Coast includes:
Golden hour lighting
The soft, warm glow just before sunset creates flattering light that enhances skin tones and creates that dreamy coastal feel.
Movement and natural posing
Walking along the shoreline, letting the breeze catch your dress, and simply enjoying the moment leads to the most authentic images.
A relaxed pace
Beach sessions allow time to pause, breathe, and soak in this chapter of life.
For many first-time moms like Skylar, these photos become more than just images—they become a way to remember the quiet moments before everything changes in the most beautiful way.

As the sun dipped toward the horizon over the Gulf, Skylar stood barefoot in the sand, one hand resting gently on her growing belly. The breeze picked up just enough to move her dress, and the sky turned those soft pastel shades that make Southwest Florida sunsets so unforgettable.
It was one of those peaceful, simple moments that perfectly captures what maternity photography is all about:
The anticipation.
The transformation.
The beginning of a whole new story.
And soon, a baby boy will make that story even sweeter.
If you’re expecting and considering maternity photos along the Gulf Coast, a sunset session at Venice Beach is a beautiful way to document this season.
As a Southwest Florida maternity photographer, I help guide you through everything—from wardrobe options in the client closet to choosing the best location and timing for golden hour.
